To the west of Israel is the Mediterranean Sea, which makes up the majority of Israel's 273 km (170 mi) coastline, and the Gaza Strip. Israel has a small coastline on the Red Sea in the south. Israel's area is approximately 20,770 km 2 (8,019 sq mi), which includes 445 km 2 (172 sq mi) of inland water.

The coolest is the weather in Eilat in December, January and February. The air temperature drops here to 20-22 degrees in the daytime and to 14-16 at night. And the hottest are June, July and August - 38-40 degrees in the daytime and 30-32 at night. Tensions between Israel and its neighbours meant the early years were challenging for Eilat, particularly when Egypt blocked the Straits of Tiran in 1956 and 1967 respectively, stopping all ships going to Eilat. Fortunately, things began to look up after Israel signed peace treaties with Egypt in 1979 and with Jordan in 1994.
