Half-Life 2 Classic is a Half-Life mod that aims to recreate Half-Life 2 in the Goldsource engine. Why? Mainly just for fun. A lot of people like how the Goldsource engine feels, or enjoy the gameplay of Half-Life more than it's sequel.

True, but I feel he makes some good points about how those things work within the context of the Half Life 2 games. Maybe not the most revolutionary games ever. But Valve really put those elements together masterfully. At least in my opinion. These and Half Life 1 are really some of the few linear FPS games that I love.
These techniques for pulling your eyes would be further refined in Half-Life 2, where a flying ship might draw your attention up to note a climbable spot, or a green light shine on an exit.
